Buddhist conference this weekend in Sydney

So this is one of those blog posts where everyone finds out something new about a person πŸ™‚ I have been studying Chan Buddhism casually since I was 15 and with a more serious focus in the past 2 years. Chan Buddhism is an big part of Shaolin Kung Fu which is what I started at aged 15 (after 3 years of Karate training). I really love my Kung Fu and Chan studies. They promote a sense of purpose, clarity and self-responsibility that I try to reflect in my life.

Anyway, the reason I’m bringing this up is because in Sydney this weekend is a large Buddhist conference called Change you mind, change the world with loads of different Buddhist schools coming together to learn and share. If there are people out there who read my blog interested in Buddhism, it would be a great experience for you! Several of my teachers are participating including the head of my school who is a major inspiration, Abbot Shi Yuan Zhi on the second day.

Anyone interested in studying either Chan Buddhism or Shaolin martial arts can check out my school here. I have looked around at loads of schools and always came back to this one. There are schools in Sydney, Canberra, Wollongong and the Blue Mountains.

Software Freedom Day online shop is up!

I’ve been working on putting up the online Software Freedom Day shop, which at this point includes tshirts for the event and CD packs of The Open CD. Teams running SFD events (that register prior to the 31st July) get a 50% discount so spread the word! πŸ™‚

We also have more and better free schwag for teams than ever before including balloons, CDs, shirts, stickers and more. We also have more sponsors than ever before but more on than soon πŸ™‚

We already have 125 teams registered from all around the world and it is only July! This year is looking to be huge!

More information soon to come πŸ™‚ Comments on the shirt design are welcome.

Report on the Education Expo

Two weeks ago a band of dedicated SLUGers set up a Linux Australia booth at the enormous NSW Education Expo. The event attracts around 8000 attendees, mostly students, parents and teachers, so it was a great opportunity to take Linux and FOSS to the masses! We have set up a booth at this event for 3 years now and are very popular. The adults want to know more about this “free software” stuff, the kids love the games and job opportunities and the teachers learn more tools for education and learning. On the booth we had Red Hat calendars that were popular, computers to demonstrate, stickers, handouts (including information specific to FOSS in education), penguins and shirts. We had Ubuntu & Edubuntu, as well as slightly dated Debian, Fedora and Suse to give away as well as some leftover lca2007 stuff.

On Sunday we had the OLPC there for one day which was vey popular. A few school girls who had done a school project on the OLPC thought this was awesome and walked away saying “Linux is cool”. Hopefully that’ll be a few more in the workforce πŸ™‚

A huge thanks to all the volunteers that helped out:

  • Sridhar Dhanapalan
  • Grant Parnell
  • Andreas Fischer
  • Martin Visser
  • Jeremy Visser
  • Rodger Dean
  • Richard Hayes
  • Robert Morris

Also many thanks to Red Hat Australia for providing some schwag, Everything Linux for providing stickers, some CDs and shirt printing on the spot for $10, Craige McWhirter for providing two great demonstration computers, and Waugh Partners for providing loads of printing and fluffy penguins.

Below are some photos that were taken with the OLPC, unfortunately we didn’t remember to take a proper camera, but these are cool πŸ™‚

Software Freedom Day 2007 – 83 teams registered!

It is almost 3 months away from Software Freedom Day 2007, and we already have 83 teams registered! This year a lot of work went into the new registration system to make it easier for teams and for everyone else to find information, see all the teams, and get a feeling for what a truly global and participatory event this is. Check out which continents all the teams are from, it is fairly evenly balanced. As usual, Australia is doing well with 10 teams already registered!

Teams that want special SFD goodies including CDs, shirts, stickers and balloons need to be registered by the 31st July, so get in soon and register your team. Last year we had about 200 teams all up (including all the ones that registered after the free goodies date had passed), so we hope to have 300 teams this year!

The new Software Freedom International Board which includes 3 top SFD team leaders from 2006 is totally awesome, being extremely active, enthusiastic and full of new ideas.

Rock on and remember, freedom isn’t just for geeks, so let’s all get out there and help spread the important ideas of software freedom. I’ve got a short “About Software Freedom” page for anyone interested.
