The GP2X is now in Australia. I only just heard about this little thing, but it looks uber cool and it runs Open Source including by the look of it, open source firmware on open hardware. Wikipedia has a good writeup about it, and it looks like it does games emulation from other systems. It also supports Ogg Vorbis. Nice 🙂 If anyone has used one or has an opinion on them, please add comments 🙂

Oooooh, I’ll probably end up buying one. I have a thing for gadgets running Linux at the moment.
I’m one of the devs/admins on the effort to build a completely open-source OS: http://sourceforge.net/projects/open2x/
Overall it’s not a bad little device, and the manufacturer is still providing their own firmware updates. Unfortunately they aren’t yet 100% compliant with respect to the GPL, as they have not released the sources to their port of mplayer, and their closed source music player links against the GPL’d libmad.
I’d have to say one of the best native games is Vektar, which is a nice take on geometry wars. I’ve only really played with the genesis/master system emulator, but it is almost perfect.
