Perhaps moving to SP2 will help - it has a tonne of bug fixes. Plus you wouldn't be getting any more updates from Microsoft unless you are using SP2 - so that means the computer prob has a whole bunch of unpatched security holes. :( Machine sounds like its totally borked.
